The school's methods for written calculations

Every year we run sessions for parents on the way the school teaches children to calculate - the children might call this 'doing sums'.  Some parents have asked if the materials we use could be published on the website and we are happy to make them available.

You can see the materials by clicking here>

Homework

We set homework for our children each week. Homework is set on Friday and must be returned by Wednesday.  Unfortunately teachers cannot guarantee to mark any pieces of homework that are submitted late.

Children are expected to read every night and those that have computers with internet access at home are expected to work to achieve 1000 points a week on ‘Mathletics’. The children have all been taught how to work on ‘Mathletics’ and the web address and their log in details are stuck into the front of their reading diaries.  We will be making arrangements later in the year for those who do not have computers to access this valuable resource.

Certificates are given for silver and gold awards in ‘Mathletics’. Children are expected to read and complete their reading diaries every night.  The homework set by teachers could be English or maths or items to do with the children’s thematic studies in the rest of the curriculum.  Sometimes work not completed within the time set in class may be sent home to be finished.  The number of pieces of homework completed is noted on the children’s reports at the end of the year.

We are pleased to say that most children at Whitehorse are very conscientious about completing their homework!  If parents would like to do some additional work with their children we have some suggestions based around our thematic curriculum.

Request for exceptional leave

Request for exceptional leave replaces holiday requests and reflects the fact that schools are no longer allowed to authorise requests for leave except in exceptional circumstances.

The kind of circumstances that merit exceptional leave are listed on the request form which you can download below.  Would parents please note that requests for exceptional leave can only be authorised by the Headteacher and judgements as to whether or not to grant exceptional leave are made on a case by case basis.

If exceptional leave is refused and parents choose to go ahead regardless they will be referred to the Educational Welfare Service (EWO) and a home visit may be required or a £50 fine issued.

Holiday dates are available on this site, generally two years in advance.  Please make every effort to book leave in the school holidays.

School Dinners

ParentPayOur school dinners are provided by a company called Eden.  Payments for school dinners are made through a service called 'ParentPay'.  You can pay in 2 ways - online using a debit or credit card or in cash at local 'Pay point' stores.

Once you have a login for ParentPay, which will be arranged for you by the school office, you can not only make payments but also check menus for school dinners that week.  Our new till system means that you will soon be able to check the choices that your individual child made for lunch that day.  Please check out all the facilities available to parents by visiting the ParentPay website.
